Matchday 2 Report - 50s vs Seven Bridges FC

OGFC O50s vs. Seven Bridges FC, Saturday, September 26, 2015, 12:00 pm, Delta Park Field 5.

The Over 50s team played their second ever league match on Saturday at Delta Park. The match was a back and forth affair for the first 15 minutes, until Todd Wilson unleashed an absolute golazo from about 30 yards out that dipped over the opposing keeper’s outstretched arms and just under the crossbar, giving the team its first league goal and first lead. The team held that lead for another 10 minutes, but then gave it up near the end of the first half, first on a crossing pass that just missed keeper Lee Tyler’s outstretched hands before being put in, and the other on a header off of a corner kick. The team went into halftime down 2-1.

The opponents opened the second half with two goals within the first 15 minutes, both off of defensive breakdowns resulting in a 1-on-1 against the new keeper, John Clarke. The next 15 minutes had Seven Bridges pressing the attack, which was repelled – including 3 fantastic diving saves by John Clarke, and a penalty kick that hit the woodwork and was pushed away by the defense. Defender McCoy Smith recorded the team’s first booking for a “tactical foul” against a streaking winger; team consensus was there was more embellishment than foul, but the resulting free kick was uneventful. The final 15 minutes of the match yielded two more late goals, both on 1-on-1 attacks against the keeper.

The team continues to show improvement, but stringing passes together, being more active in challenging opponents holding the ball, and continuing to hold a defensive line and marking attackers to reduce 1-on-1 chances are all areas to focus on.
