OGFC O50s vs. Seven Bridges FC, Sunday, November 15, 2015, 4:00 pm, Jefferson High School.
The Over 50s squad played their 9th match against Seven Bridges at Jefferson High School in NE Portland.
At the pregame strategy briefing, manager Lee Tyler emphasized again completed passes, and awarded prizes for performance at Match 8: Mohammad Bader for his top-corner goal, and Rainer Theriauf for completing the most passes (or at least, keeping track of his completed passes). This game also was one for continuing that strategy, given the positive effect it has had on overall team play.
The score remained level at 0-0 through the first 15 minutes of play, until Klair Creer broke open the match with a goal to put the 50s up 1-0 (the 50s team has developed a pattern of frequently scoring first). The 50s remained on top until the latter part of the first half, but Seven Bridges knotted the score with a goal which bounced off the post an in after defender Bob Kish and keeper McCoy Smith collided with the attacking player. Near the end of the first half, Seven Bridges took the lead off of a low shot slotted into the side netting. Several acrobatic saves by the 50s keeper kept the score going into the intermission, with Seven Bridges holding a 2-1 lead at half.
The 50s continued good play in the second half, effectively containing the offensive attack and holding and passing the ball effectively up field. Nevertheless, two careless put-backs by the keeper allowed Seven Bridges to score two easy goals deep in the box, followed by a well-placed goal that went right between the keeper's outstretched hand and the side post, and a final tally off a looping shot that went over the keeper and was buried on a header at the post. 50s had several decent instances of pushing the ball upfield using coordinated passing, but was not able to put another one into the net.
Despite the 6-1 score, this result showed significant improvement in overall excecution versus the first meeting between these teams (at which Seven Bridges also won 6-1).
Next and final match is Sunday, December 6, 2015, 4:00 pm at Jefferson High School. Opponent is Imperial Soccer Team (to whom OGFC lost 5-0 in their first meeting this season) currently 5-2-1, 13 GF, 12 GA.
