Matchday 3 Report - 50s vs. Fat Tuesday FC

OGFC O50s vs. Fat Tuesday FC, Sunday, October 4, 2015, 2:00 pm, King’s Way Christian School.

The Over 50s team played their third league match on Sunday at King’s Way Christian School in Vancouver. As with their previous effort, they started the match off with a bang, scoring the first goal (and second in team history) within the first 5 minutes of play. Bob Kish fed a lovely through ball to a streaking Gary Golisch, who expertly gathered the ball, took a few touches, and slotted it past the charging Fat Tuesday keeper for a 1-0 lead. That lead held for about 5 minutes, but the opponents knotted the match up after a cross into the box which was finished past goalkeeper John Clarke. Two more goals were put in before halftime by Fat Tuesday, both on through balls leaving the keeper with 1-on-1 challenges to confront, past the midway point of the first half. Fat Tuesday took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Fat Tuesday continued to press the attack, effectively using touch passing, crossing runs, and through balls to retain possession and set up shots. The opponents put two shots in using high loopers just over the keeper’s reach and under the crossbar, and another on a through ball setting up a 1-on-1 versus the Old Growth keeper, resulting in a final score of 6-1. Keeper John Clarke again had an outstanding game making saves on the line and coming out for several long through balls. Although Old Growth did bring the ball up using touch passing on a few occasions, and put a few shots toward the goal, they were not able to mount a consistent sustained attack against the Fat Tuesday defense.

The team continues to improve – showing they can regularly score on top-flight competition, and can string passes together to move the ball up and around the pitch. Marking and challenging opponents with the ball, and moving to open space and talking to teammates, are areas for further improvement.
